The Six Reasons For Confederation:
1. Political deadlock led to the Great Coalition in the United Province of Canada. Political Deadlock is when two parties have the same rights and power. he two main party leaders John A. McDonald and George Brown were enemies until John stated that he will join forces with any party to help his home.
2. A railway linking to the colonies was needed to increase trade and to move troops. And it would be less expensive for moving goods. However the two railways both met financial troubles.
3. Cancellation of the Reciprocity treaty by the United States in 1865 ended free trade between British North America (BNA) and United States (US). This was because when US wanted to attack and take over (If below does not happen), they wouldn't feel sorry for themselves when Canada was taken over.
4. There was a threat to American expansion into the British North America (BNA). This is called Manifest Destiny.
5. Great Britain wanted her colonies to be more self sufficient. Otherwise known as the end of the corn laws. Another thing is that they wanted to not pay tariffs or taxes
6. Some people (especially in Canada West) want to expand settlement into Rupert's land and the North West Territories. The government thought this as well so that this area would not be easily taken over.
Six Reasons for Confederation:
1. Political Deadlock
Canada West & Canada East - part of United Province of Canada
- each had an equal number of seats in the Legislative Assembly
Parties in the Legislative Assembly:
Canada West
Canada East
Liberal-Conservative (Tories)
Le Parti Bleu (Conservatives)
Sir John A. MacDonald
Georges-Etienne Cartier
vs.
vs.
Reform Party (Clear Grits)
Le Parti Rouge (Reform)
George Brown
Antoine-Aimé Dorion
Coalition: at least one party from each section has to cooperate to get legislation
passed
Political Deadlock: nothing can get done; votes end in "ties".
The Great Coalition: 1864, George Brown
- everyone except Parti Rouge joins together
- could pass laws and make improvements (railways)
2. Need for a Railway
Obstacles separating the United Province of Canada from the Atlantic Colonies:
- mountains in Gaspé
- northern part of the state of Maine
- St. Lawrence River freezes every winter - no boats
Advantages of an intercolonial railway:
- more trade between colonies
- faster mail delivery
- more troops can be moved if they go to war with the US
The Grand Trunk Railway:
- Sarnia -> Riviere du Loup
- bankrupt
The Great Western Railway
- Niagara River -> Windsor
(not mine, this is somebody else's work)
-political deadlock
-self sufficiency
-manifest destiny
-railway
-wish to move from sea to sea
-Cancellation of the Reciprocity treaty by the United States
there are six reasons for confederation.
Articals of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation created a loose union of the States. Each state was essentially independent. There was no real Federal Government under the Articles. Nearly all business of government was conducted by the states, including taxation and defense.
The major problem of the government under the Articles of Confederation was that the national government was unable to enforce its laws. The Articles of Confederation were created on November 15, 1777.
Article 2 of the confederation is very important because it made the union of the thirteen colonies legal.
The Articles of Confederation orformally the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union was the first Constitution. And has beensuperseded by the current one
Bulgaria is not a federal union or confederation like the Switzerland. It is a one country, one nation. It has no federations.
