This is sort of confusing. A U.S. President can serve only two terms. However, the number of years he or she can serve is limited to ten. A term consists of four year, and so the math doesn't seem to come out right. What this means is that if a President dies while in office, his or her successor (the Vice President) may only remain in office for a total of ten years. One of the best known examples of this is the case of former President Lyndon Johnson. Johnson succeeded Kennedy, and he finished out Kennedy's term. He was re-elected in the election of 1964--this was his first campaign for the Presidency. However, Johnson couldn't run again in the election of 1968 because another term would've put him over the ten-year limit. Corrective comment by reader: LBJ only served as President from Nov. 63 to Jan 65, finishing Kennedy's term, so would have been eligible for another term after his election as Preesident, no? So isn't the above incorrect? If not, why was there no furor when he made his famous "I will not serve" speech?
