The Hindus have got several texts; many, many texts including the Vedas, Upanishads, the Puranas, the Bhagavad Gita. There are so many Hindu scriptures, but the most important of these are the Upanishads, which are the essence of the Vedas. All of the Hindu sacred texts finally summarize into what is known as the Mahavakyas or the four principle statements: Tat Twam Asi, Ayam Atma Brahma, Prajnanam Brahma, Aham Brahamasmi. These four principle statements are led into our life with two magic words called Neti Neti, which means we are not this body, we are not this mind, we are the Divine Soul. We are a manifestation of God. This is the essence of original Hinduism known as Sanatana Dharma.

The Vedas are considered the oldest and most authoritative scriptures in Hinduism. They consist of four collections of hymns and rituals: Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda. The beliefs found in the Vedas include the worship of various deities, the performance of rituals for spiritual growth and material prosperity, and the concept of dharma (duty/righteousness).

THE VEDAS are the most important and sacred texts of Hindus. The Vedas are the world's most ancient scripture.

The earliest written Vedas date to about 1400 B.C.E (Before the Common Era), but the songs they capture in letters are a great deal older, although no one can say by how much.

The language of the Vedas is Sanskrit, a language that is so holy that the very word Sanskrit means "perfect".

There are four Vedas:

  • The Rig Veda
  • The Sama Veda
  • The Yajur Veda
  • The Atharvana Veda

Each Veda has four layers:

  • Samhithas (a collection of hymns)
  • Brahmanas (directions about sacrifice)
  • Aranyaka (the forest songs)
  • Upanishads (which searches for the meaning behind it all)

Other sacred texts of Hindus are:

  • Ramayana
  • Mahabharata
  • Bhagwad Geeta
  • Srimad Bhagvatam
  • Manusmriti
  • Shiva Purana

Hinduism doesn't have a single Holy or Sacred Book which has to be followed.

Also, some say Hinduism is a way of life than a religion to have one set of rules.
Vedas, Bhagavadgeeta, Bhgavatam, Ramayana, mahabharata, Upanishand, Purana

The Rig Veda, compiled around 1000 BCE in an archaic form of Sanskrit, is the oldest and most important of the Vedas. Hindu mythology and theology are mostly derived from the Sanskrit masterpieces, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, which were developed gradually between about 400 BCE and 400 CE. The Upinishads, composed by various authors beginning in the 7th century BCE, are prose treatises that deal with the individual's soul (atman) and its relationship with the collective universal soul (brahman), among other issues. Another important source for Hindu mystical beliefs is the Puranas, which are later Sanskrit treatises that deal with legends, religious practices, holy places and so on. The Tantras were religious poems written around the Middle Ages to supplement the older Puranas and instruct worshippers how to perform modern ceremonies.
