Bridget "Biddy" Mason was born into slavery in 1881, but ultimately won her freedom and went on to have an impressive career in California as a nurse and a midwife, and a businesswoman. She was one of the first black women to buy and own property, and thanks to her shrewd investments, she became wealthy. But she did not forget where she came from, and became well-known as a philanthropist, helping the poor and bringing gifts (and encouragement) to inmates in prison. She also was one of the founders of the Los Angeles branch of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church.
