It can't be Written again or it's contents cannot be changed after once Written.
It's Advantages is seen mostly for -
1) Distribution purpose by the Companies so that the Customer cannot change it's contents or modify it.
CD - ROMs were used to Distribute Computer Softwares,like Games and Multimedia
Applications.
*So the reason it cannot be modified,CD - RW usage is encouraged . But Still Distribution uses CD - ROM.
2)Larger Capacity to hold Data at its time of Invention.At the time when ROM's were introduced , they can data upto KB's and MB's .
But CD - ROM 's were capable of storing Higher Volumes of data.
Thats why now CD - ROM are also Replaced by DVD - ROMs.
