What are the advantages of fuel wood?

1. Burning it does not release harmful or toxic chemicals into the atmosphere

2. The product is charcoal which can be used for other purposes e.g. barbeques

3.The logging business (where the trees are cut down) gives people jobs and money to live off of

4. It is available in places with little money (e.g. Africa) for the locals to use

5. Locals do not have to pay for the wood and it is easily accessible

A mature forest absorbs no carbon dioxide, the carbon the trees traps as it grows is released back into the atmosphere when the tree dies and rots. If a tree is cut down and burnt then as long as another tree grows in its place then by the time that tree is as big as the one cut down the net effect on carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is zero. Of course this only works if another tree grows in its place. Please note that this does not mean you can burn whole forests, graze cattle on the area and expect it to be carbon neutral.......

Wood is of course a renewable resource. This use assumes that the cutting of trees is regulated in such a way that the tree population is allowed to remain constan or increase.

Because we can burn recently grown wood, and we can plant more trees. When oil or coal is used up, it's gone and can't be replaced.
