The Nile carries a lot of silt. Prior to the dam, annual floods deposited this this silt along the banks of the lower Nile, adding fertility. These floods were caused by rains in the upper Nile every June to September. Most of the silt comes from the Blue Nile and the Atbara River in the Ethiopian highlands. The Blue and the White Nile join at Khartoum in Sudan.
The dam put a stop to these annual floods, making farming more difficult and dependent on commercial fertilizers, an economic hardship. Lake Nassar created by the dam is filling up with silt.
