The Republic of South Africa a constitutional democracy much like the government in the US. There are three branches, Legislative, Executive, and Judiciary. Legislative authority is held by the Parliament of South Africa. Executive authority is held by the President of South Africa. The president is elected from the Parliament to serve a fixed term. The national, provincial and local levels of government all have legislative and executive authority in their own spheres, and are defined in the South African Constitution as "distinctive, interdependent and interrelated".

The Central African Republic works in a similar way, but the Prime Minister holds Executive power.

Political associations such as the African Union offer hope for greater co-operation and peace between the continent's many countries. The African Union consists of all African countries except Morocco.
