Using a variety of different media helps you to learn better. If you rely on just printed words, for example, you might not be able to visualize an important picture; if you use words and pictures, that would be easier. Theoretically, it would be great to utilize every one of your senses in order to learn; however, that's hard to do in practice. Most people rely on a combination of words, pictures, and sounds in order to learn the most effectively. It's hard to incorporate touch, smell, and taste into the equation - although you really understand something if you've actually encountered it yourself, and can have the opportunity to touch and smell it (maybe not taste!) in person.
