Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is a highly stable material. It is composed of short wood fibers and a binder matrix. It has no grain to cause chipping or tear-out during machining or processing, which also makes it a homogenous, dimensionally stable material. It takes paint and other surface coatings well, and can be suitable for outdoor applications, if finished properly.
Its cheap. Very stable, won't warp. No knots to show through the paint. It comes in several precut widths and, you are not limited to 8' lengths like plywood.
MDF boards are widely used in making the side and backing parts of kitchen cabinets. The flatness and ability to grip screws is important, and it's cheap compared to most furniture woods.
