Although I have never been to Munich myself, I have found Monogram's Must See Sites resource pages to be very helpful in deciding what to see on vacation. For a list of must see sites in Munich, visit their website: http://www.monogramstravel.com/local-host-picks/munich/
The essentials and very special in Munich are:
- the mechanical clockwork every 11am in the main town square "Marienplatz". It is the only of its kind in the world!
- "Hofbräuhaus" beer hall, also for non-alcoholic drinks and traditional Bavarian meals
- the Deutsche Museum the third largest technical museum in the world after the Smithsonian and London's museum. Includes the transport and aeronautical displays at Theresienhohe and Oberschleisheim. Needs 2-3 days for the fanatic scientist!
- the hunting museum
- the new BMW museum
- Olympia Park
- the mountains at Garmisch-Partenkirchen (1 hour by train)
- the castles at Hohenschwangau (2 hours by bus)
I have made a list of all the main attractions at: http://www.listsofbests.com/list/15412 and reports, tips and pictures are at http://www.globosapiens.net/Germany-travel/Bayern/Munich.html
