There is no best drug for treating anxiety. Every patient is unique and the anxiety drug that may be best for one person, may not work well for another. That's why it is common for physicians to have their patients try a drug for several weeks or months and see if it works well for them. If it doesn't, the physician may prescribe a different drug instead. It is best to consult with your licensed and trained health professional to find out the best drug options for your anxiety, and they can work with you to determine what is ideal. For some patients, a good drug can make all the difference in the world on their ability to cope wtih anxiety. By the way, other useful treatments, in addition to drugs, that can lessen anxiety include: regular exercise; a good diet and proper rest; little or no caffeine such as from coffee or soft drinks; keeping your mind mainly focused on the positive; and proper breathing. Good luck and good health!

There are many medications for panic disorder, most being opiates or narcotic tranquilizers. I would recommend before taking these pills and injections, however, a course of therapy and counseling, as most of the medicines have some risk of dependence and almost all have serious side-effects.

If you have an anxiety disorder and ADD will ADD medication make the anxiety worse?

It can, but it might not. ADD medications in the "stimulant" category--e.g. methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, Focalin) and Adderall--while excellent medications for attention deficit disorder, can make anxiety symptoms worse. Strattera, an ADD medication not in the "stimulant" category, usually does not worsen anxiety symptoms. In fact, it might even improve them. On the other hand, there are excellent anti-anxiety medications available. So it would make sense to treat the anxiety at the same time as you're treating the ADD. Then both problems are solved.

You can help treat anxiety for yourself by exposing yourself to the situations that make you the most anxious. You don't have to give yourself a crash course in whatever that is, but gradually dipping your toes in the water could make things a lot easier!
