Basically all paints are excellent at what they are made for: to protect the substrate from moisture penetration. The differences therefore are more aesthetic than anything else. The rule of thumb is you get what you pay for. The more expensive the paint the better it is. This is because it is probably the most price sensitive product you can find.

People are living and dying over a few cents a gallon. So you know everyone wants to sell at the cheapest price they can. But there are real differences in the quality of the latex, the extenders, the drying agents etc. So price reflects these costs.

In thirty years of recommending paint colors for exteriors I have used every brand and have found that Benjamin Moore hands down is the best. The colors are richer and and more alive. I remember one year doing colors for the buildings on either side of my office. One was done in Ben Moore, the other in Glidden, an excellent brand. When they were done the house in Glidden literally looked like it had be painted three years earlier. The difference is even more pronounced with cheaper paints.

I have found that the Ben Moore resists fading better than anything else and I live in Colorado where the UV is intense. Others that I have found to be excellent are Pratt and Lambert and C2 Paint. I LOVE C2 paint but it is expensive and not available a lot of places.

What ever brand you choose use a satin or low sheen semi gloss finish. Your house will not will not look shiny. Gloss finishes are tougher than flat, shed dirt better( flat paints actually hold dirt) and the colors are richer.

I've used all brands, and that from Walmart does fine, since it has a good texture without being too thin. Better, more expensive paints seem to have nicer toned pigments, but for many of us a basic color without depth is just fine. It really depends on what you expect of the paint and where you will be using it.

Sears--their Weatherbeater Ultra (accept no other Weatherbeater) is made by Sherwin-Williams and it is exceptional paint, an acrylic with polyurethane added.

If you can get it (BIG if), Sikkens Rubbol is at least as good, and is probably much better.

AYou will find a lot of local paint stores that offer good exterior paints. However, I would recommend California Paints. They have a good reputation and have some of the best rated exterior paints.
