Fibrin
The mesh of insoluble fibers that aids blood clotting is made up of a protein called fibrin. The network of interlacing protein strands created by fibrin works to catch cells and form a barrier, aiding the formation of a clot.
Blood cells and strands of fibrin come together to seal the wound.

Tubes used for blood bank (Pink and Lavender top) contain a chemical called EDTA that binds the calcium in blood, which is needed for blood to clot. Red or Gold top tubes contain no chemicals to prevent the blood to clot, so the blood will clot with out being exposed to air. Each specific department in the lab have different colored tubes with different chemical/no chemical in them depending on what test has been ordered.
Sometimes blood does clot inside your body - if there is an injury or a rough place like plaque in the blood vessel, the body will form a clot around that place. Other than that, however, your blood has natural anticoagulants that keep it from clotting as it moves around the body.
