Phocomelia means seal limbs. There was epidemic of phocomelia in West Germany in late fifties in last century. It was caused by the drug called as Thalidomide. It was available then as over the counter medicine in few countries for morning sickness. Australia was also affected but USA was spared, due vigilant FDA officer.
