Some people say it refers to how your family does things: their customs, the holidays they observe, the food they eat, etc. But when we discuss culture, we are usually referring to something larger than just one family. A common definition, used by universities, is that culture refers to "shared patterns of behaviors, as well as shared interactions and beliefs, all of which are learned through a process of socialization. These shared patterns identify the members of a culture group while also distinguishing those of another group." What that means is that we are "socialized" (taught by our parents, our schools, our society) into how we are supposed to act.

For example, American culture involves certain shared rituals (4th of July, Thanksgiving); shared symbols (the eagle, the flag, George Washington's picture on the dollar bill, the National Anthem); a shared understanding of what "government" means (we have a president and a congress, and the president lives in the White House); and shared customs (we shake hands when meeting someone, kids are expected to attend school, drivers drive on the right side of the road). Our culture also teaches us other things, such as the norms of dress (what do men wear, what do women wear, what do people in specific occupations wear). There are also sub-cultures: smaller cultural groups that exist within the majority culture-- for example, American Buddhists (or Muslims or Jews or Hindus) are still Americans, but they also conform to the particular customs, dietary laws, and religious rituals of their culture.

We were not born knowing about any of this: a baby does not know he or she is "American, " for example. Culture is always learned. It is transmitted to us, through parents, teachers, the clergy, the media, and our peers. And throughout our life, we are taught how members of our culture are supposed to behave and what members of our culture generally believe. Of course, it should also be noted that a culture is not frozen in time: it can change. And as any history book will tell you, it does change, although cultural change can be a very slow process.
