Some of the general warning signs are depressions and withdrawal. The person might start giving away possessions, or might start talking about a future without that person's presence. The thing is, you can't really tell. Some people will do those types of things just because they are sad or want to start over. ... or maybe they want attention. The best idea if you suspect suicidal intent is to encourage the person to talk to someone about it. Reinforce the fact that people do care, and that problems, no matter how difficult, are not insurmountable, and that depression is treatable. No one has to feel horrible forever. If someone is thinking about or threatening to harm themselves, please don't try to handle it yourself unless you are trained in that area.
