Apples (fresh to eat) need to be firm but not hard and can have brown spots because they are just like freckles/moles on a human and are totally harmless. Try to avoid apples that are blood red because they are usually less flavourful and can be bitter.

Bananas are best bought green to ripen in few days, if you want to stop them ripening faster split them up into individual bananas, and they are fine to eat if they have small brown spots on them too.
