I believe it has something to do with the general wind direction. It tends, as far as I know, to progress from west to east, so when a plane is flying west (to Melbourne), the plane is flying against the wind, and will take longer. When the plane is flying east (i.e. from Adelaide to Melbourne), it is flying with the wind and thus doesn't take as long. The same thing occurs flying from Melbourne to New Zealand - it takes less time to reach New Zealand than it does to return - the difference being roughly an hour.

Why does Adelaide have a different time to Melbourne?

Adelaide's time difference to Melbourne's is due to the fact that it lies further to the west and so is slightly behind in terms of when the sun rises and sets. Broken Hill in New South Wales is also on Adelaide's time zone because it lies so far to the west of that state.AnswerAustralia's time zones are in dire need of overhauling. Adelaide (Central Standard Time) should perhaps be one hour, not half an hour, behind EST. There is a strange time zone on the WA/SA border (right in between WA & SA time, so 45 minutes behind Adelaide time, called Central Western Time, which is semi-official, otherwise sunset would be at 3.30pm in winter.

Was there any time when Canberra was not the Australian capital?

Yes and no. Canberra was only formally established in 1913. Prior to 1901, the states were not federated and therefore there was no national capital. Between 1901 and 1913, the temporary seat of power was in Melbourne, but Melbourne was not Australia's capital city. The fact was, Melbourne was the only city with a building large enough to house all of Parliament. Canberra is the city listed as Australia's capital, past and present - not Melbourne.
