Patricians and plebeians were the two main divisions in ancient Roman society, in the very early days. The patricians were the wealthy upper class landowners and the plebeians were the working poor. The patricians were the rulers until the plebeians revolted and gained their civil rights. Over time, both the patricians and the plebeians became the nobility or aristocrats of Rome as both social divisions could traced their ancestry to the founding of the city.
