The two cultures were very different, but three of the reasons appear below:

1. Most white settlers were Christian, native Americans weren't

2. Native Americans were usually more prepared for Midwest winters than the newer white settlers (survived more gruel-some winters than whites with stocking up on food, clothing, etc.)

3. Many native Americans preferred to live and sleep outside during the the spring, summer, and fall while the white settlers depended on their houses for mostly all their shelters

Mostly these two are "Terms" and usage by custom. Technically all Native Americans are indigenous to America, but if you were in Australia and used the term "indigenous" you would refer to those people who are generally called "Aboriginal" in that area.

So there is no real difference, except for preferred usage of terms.

Are Mexicans a mixture of Spanish and Native American people?

Yes, between 60-80% of the Mexican population are Mestizos, people of mixed European ("White") and Native American background. The Mestizo statistic however, does not include all full blood natives who speak Spanish and do not live in indigenous communities: the Native American, or Amerindian population ranges from 10% to 30% of the Mexican population (between 11 and 34 million in 2010) and such people are the pure descendants of Native American peoples who inhabited Mexico before the arrival of Europeans during the 16th century.
