Well, there are many types of assassinations in halo reach for example.
You can assassinate by the following.
1.Both players in the air
2.One player in air
3.Both players on ground
And the combinations for them are the following.
1.Both players in the air
Hold A then Right Button
Hold X then Right Button
Hold B then Right Button
Hold Y then Right Button
2.One player in air
Hold A then Right Button
Hold X then Right Button
Hold B then Right Button
Hold Y then Right Button
3.Both players on the ground
Hold A then Right Button
Hold X then Right Button
Hold B then Right Button
Hold Y then Right Button
I have checked them and they have worked every time I assassinated.

The assassinations vary also depending on if you are an elite or Spartan. Experiment by assassinating from different angles and note the results.
