How to get fit? There's really three things- eat right, exercise and take care of yourself. Eating right involves eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while including enough lean protein and some monounsaturated fats. Eliminate unneeded saturated fat, increase your consumption of soluble fiber. Get rid of trans-fats. Replace enriched wheat flour with whole grains. Avoid anything that you can't justify eating- no cake, cookies, candy and replace it with the above-mentioned items. Making simple substitutions can make your diet a lot healthier. Drink skim milk instead of 2% or whole. Don't eat fried foods when you can eat grilled or other less fatty forms of the food. Avoid eating products which have added sugar or fats- you're getting less nutritional value per bite or calories. You'll also want to make sure you limit your total calories to as many as you need- but this should come naturally as you replace calorically-dense foods with less dense fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Exercise- both cardiovascular and resistance (weight lifting) are important components of getting fit. Cardiovascular exercise can be simply thought of as any activity that gets your heart pumping. Biking, running and vigorous sports are all great forms of cardiovascular exercise- gyms also have exercise machines such as stationary bikes and treadmills which let you pace yourself and make sure your heart rate gets up. The American Heart Association recommends 30 to 60 minutes of moderate cardiovascular excercise a day (moderate-intensity would be jogging) Resistance training is also important for building muscle mass and increasing bone density. Weight lift with dumbells or whatever, making sure you work all of your muscles. Pushups and crunches are also good. Meet with a personal trainer at a gym to get a detailed plan setup for you. Finally, take care of yourself. Get enough sleep, don't do drugs, don't smoke, don't drink heavily and monitor your stress levels. Keep yourself happy, maintain social connections and laugh a lot. Thousands of studies and hundreds of books have been written on fitness, I've attempted to condense them down to a few paragraphs. If anything is unclear to you, Google it, there are plenty of resources available. Be wary of the source of your information. Look to scientific journals, respected organizations (American Heart Association, American Cancer Society) and government information (CDC, FDA, USDA, WHO) as your source, not new-age, homeopathic remedy "detoxifying" sites.
