Size (in MB) is the main disadvantage.

BMP (.bmp) or Bitmaps are huge image files. By using simple Jpeg (.jpg), PNG (.png) or GIF (.gif) compression you can greatly reduce an image size, especially for web applications.

A bitmap of say, 500,000 Bytes can easily be reduced to some 15,000 Bytes by converting the image to Jpeg and slightly compressing it.

BMP files don't scale! Basically, if you have a bitmap which is 100 pixels wide and 100 pixels high and then try to stretch this so that it takes up more room, you won't increase the number of pixels in the image, so everything looks fuzzy. Use GIF, JPG or PNG formats to get better resolution when you scale images.

What does bmp mean in computer terms?

The BMP file format, sometimes called bitmap or DIB file format (for device-independent bitmap), is an image file format used to store bitmap digital images, especially on Microsoft Windows and OS/2 operating systems. Many graphical user interfaces use bitmaps in their built-in graphics subsystems;[1] for example, the Microsoft Windows and OS/2 platforms' GDI subsystem, where the specific format used is the Windows and OS/2 bitmap file format, usually named with the file extension of .BMP or .DIB (source Wikipedia) or basic metabolic panel (BMP), a group of 8 tests used as a general screening tool. Whats the difference between a JPEG and bmp images?

JPEG and BMP image types use different programs and algorithms to record and store the data. The BMP (bitmap) is the older format while the JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) format is more recent. One difference between a JPEG and a BMP file is that the bitmap file is larger in size. This is due to the JPEG file being compressed which in turn causes a loss in picture quality.

When a bmp file format is used?

When a picture is saved uncompressed from paint. You should use PNG instead of BMP as it still retains the quality loss-less but compresses it.
