For short-range (within a room) point-to-point data communication, IR is easily interrupted - think of IR as light, and imagine all the ways a light beam can be messed with.

For long-range (we had a 1-km link once), heavy fog/rain will attenuate the IR so much that communication slows/stops.

IR has mostly been superseded by Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and other R.F. wireless technologies, for range, reliability and speed.
