The disadvantages of being an EU member are the following:

-The UK must share its power

-The UK must follow the rules the EU make

Frankly, speaking as an outsider from the States, the problem with being an EU member is the EU government form itself. It bears a strong resemblence to the Articles of Confederation that the US was originally organized on - a very weak central government poorly defined, relatively undemocratic in nature, and with no real means of enforcing its decrees. This is going to go on until the EU finally decides that it need to looks like the United States of Europe, with a well-structured and full empowered central government.

The disadvantage of joining the EU is the required compliance to EU laws and regulations. Additional political pressure is put on member states to comply or risk being expelled from the EU.

The Euro 2008 complement is based on UEFA membership (the governing body of European football), of which Turkey is a member, rather than EU membership.
