They are made from the same polymer, polystyrene. Usually polystyrene is clear, hard and rigid, for example in CD cases. However, styrofoam is created by blowing air through liquid polystyrene. The bubbles are locked in the polystyrene as it solidifies, giving the syrofoam used in packaging and cups. The reason it is compressible is because the air is compressed, rather than the hard, rigid polystyrene itself.
Your best bet for avoiding rust would be to use stainless steel containers. If that's not an option, look into anti-rust coatings for your containers. There should be a way to prevent oxygen from hitting the metal and causing the oxidation that is rust.

The other common form of polystyrene is expanded polystyrene (EPS). Both EPS and XPS are made from similar materials but there are difference between the two. XPS has a higher density as compared to EPS, due to the absence of air passages between its cells. The higher density makes XPS more rigid and strong. According to Green Seal, in 1997, 120 million pounds of foam polystyrene hinged containers were used in the U.S. food packaging industry and each American throws away an average of 100 polystyrene cups each year. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters recently estimated that last year Americans used 14.4 billion hot paper cups (placed end-to-end, this many cups would circle the world 55 times). Not only do these plastic cups and take-out containers create garbage that ends up in the landfill for centuries to come (a polystyrene cup has an expected lifetime of over 500 years), they are made from non-renewable petrochemicals, and styrene, a key ingredient of polystyrene, is a suspected carcinogen and known hazardous substance.
