They are heavy to carry. The M-60 machine gun used by Grunts in Vietnam weighed approximately 21 pounds; the .308 ammunition (7.62mm NATO) weighed several pounds more; especially when carrying 300 rounds. Two hundred (in two belts) rounds came in one ammo can. As long as a GI can carry & feed the weapon, they're great! They eat lots of ammo; but if it's NOT a problem to carry the ammo...then there are few to no disadvantages to machine guns. The best place for carrying extra MG ammo was atop ACAV's (M-113 APC/Armored Personnel Carriers/Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicles) in Vietnam. The "track" (M-113) did all of the ammo carrying; the machine gunner just supported the weapon somewhere atop the "track" and kept shooting...extra belts were handed to him from the tons (litterly) sitting topside & inside the APC/ACAV. All machine guns in Vietnam came with spare barrels; when one was burned up, using asbestos gloves which were issued...the barrel was replaced.
