CO binds to both hemoglobin and myoglobin several times more strongly than does O2, rapidly denying the body and its organs of O2 causing confusion, sleepiness, and eventually death.

Because the brain is one of the first organs affected by the effects of CO, the person will not be aware of any of these symptoms.

Myoglobin with even low levels of bound CO is intensely red colored, causing the person's skin to also become red.
