Every producer hopes that no equipment needs to be used to calve out cows. But, if it's necessary, a head-gate with a gate (bi-level) attached to better access the cow's side if a C-section is necessary, or a calving pen (also known as a maternity pen), is the equipment a producer should have when calving out cows.
Use of pen-strep?
I think I can try to answer your question in laymen terms. I'm not an expert and only volunteer as a scientist in one of the US's leading brain cancer stem cell facilities. From my understaing, pen-strep is an antibiotic and depending on what your doing with your cell cultures you may or may not use it. Currently, for example, I have one culture that I split with pen-strep and another culture that I split with gentamicin (a different anti-biotic) because I am experimenting with different gene sequences and need to kill off certain cells on purpose. I hope my understading is right as I am just learning this stuff as well.

It is not recommended that you use Combi-Pen 48 with a kitten. It is not for use on small animals (kittens) or pregnant animals.

How do you separate a bull from his cows?
There are many different methods of how producers separate their bulls from their cows. For those who don't have a big ranch, horses or dogs, it may be best to run the cows and bull through a handling facility where you can easily separate the bull into one pen while you run the cows through another. Of course this all depends on how well that facility is set up and the handling knowledge of the producer. If you have some good herding dogs and a trailer, you can separate the bull from his cows that way, having the dogs herd the bull to the trailer and you hauling away the bull to his normal bull-pen area. Or, if you're on horse-back and have the dogs with you, you can also have the dogs to herd the bull back to his pen, with you helping guide the dogs to where you want the bull to go. But if you have wild bulls to separate from the cows, then you'll probably need more help than some dogs. Get some cowboys to help get the bull separated away from his cows (and most likely get him loaded up in the trailer to get sold at the auction mart).
