To put it simply radioactive fallout. You can't inhabit the area any more. There is no drinkable water left. It killed many people and many more were disfigured and have contracted cancer and other related diseases, even now

Clarification, there was no nuclear explosion at Chernobyl. The explosion that blew the roof off the reactor building was a steam explosion. Also all the fallout distributed was carried by the smoke of a graphite fire, started when the steam explosion exposed the reactor's hot graphite moderator to air (sudden release of Wigner Energy in the graphite probably also helped ignite it).
