Clarification, there was no nuclear explosion at Chernobyl. The explosion that blew the roof off the reactor building was a steam explosion. Also all the fallout distributed was carried by the smoke of a graphite fire, started when the steam explosion exposed the reactor's hot graphite moderator to air (sudden release of Wigner Energy in the graphite probably also helped ignite it).
Many people began to question whether nuclear power was safe. People began to be fearful of the dangers of nuclear power.
