The essential message of Luke's version of the story of Jesus birth was its common touch. The author of Luke called upon the census of Quirinius to show that Joseph and Mary had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem in difficult circumstances, during her pregnancy, and Jesus had to be born in a stable. Not kings or wise men, but poor shepherds came to worship Jesus. To the outside world there was nothing to suggest that Jesus was destined for greatness.

The essential message of Matthew's version of the story of Jesus birth was to draw parallels between his infancy and the Old Testament story of Joseph and Moses. First, he contradicts Luke when he tells us that Joseph's father was called Jacob, just as in the Old Testament. The king slaughtered the infants under two years old out of fear of Jesus, just as the Pharaoh had done out of fear of Moses. And just as Moses had gone on to save his people, so Jesus was destined to do.
