The sky, mid-afternoon, a beautiful canvas graced with sky blues and pure milky whites. The blue in the depths beyond and the smooth, rounded, sugary sweet clouds in the foreground; February mornings were made to be like this. Grass green lawn and garden chairs and a yellow butterfly dancing above the steamy urban pavement with an invisible partner to a made up song.

I served in the Army in Germany with this guy named Jesse. Jesse had a deep love affair with beer, but he was also a bit of a player. I'm not certain which he loved more. One night, while in town, Jesse was exploring his relationship with barley wine, when he met a girl. She was pretty, and she and Jesse seemed to be getting along very well. After talking for a bit, Jesse and the girl left together. The rest of us thought little of this, as it happened similarly most weekends. However, the next morning we noticed that Jesse was not at breakfast. Those of us who had been at the club the night before laughed and joked, but paid little more attention to it. At lunch time, when no one had yet seen Jesse, we began to get a little concerned, so we went back into town to see if we could find him. We searched at the club where he had met the girl, we went to the McDonalds and a few gasthauses we frequented, but no one had seen Jesse. There were several routes to get back to the post from town, so we split up on our way back. I an another guy went by way of the road along the stream through town. As we began to cross the walking bridge that passed over the stream closest to the post, we heard a deep groan coming from beneath the bridge. Curious and a little startled, we stopped and looked over the side. There, up to his waist in freezing cold water lay Jesse. We scrambled down the bank, dragged Jesse back up, and got him back to the barracks. As we were getting him cleaned up and warmed up, we learned that he and the girl had gone off to several other clubs after leaving us. Seems she had a deep love affair with beer also. The last thing Jesse could recall was tumbling down the bank of the stream, wondering who had moved the bridge.
