Your best bet for most travel is the Métro. There is a station within about a 10-minute walk of every part of the city. Service is fast and frequent, although the trains can sometimes be a bit crowded. You can buy extended-use tickets or carnets (ticket books) for much less than paying individual fares. Just remember to hold onto the ticket after you put it through the reader when you enter, because you have to put it through a second reader when you leave the system.
If you're taking longer trips, the RER (regional rail system) can be faster. Métro tickets are valid for RER travel within certain zones. RER trains are more like regular commuter trains in design and service. They don't stop as many places as the Métro trains, but that means they travel faster.
