The traditional homeland of the Crows after their split from the Hidatsas at some very early date was between the Upper Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers in Montana (the River Crows) and south of the Yellowstone along the Little Missouri, Powder and Bighorn Rivers in Montana and northern Wyoming (the Mountain Crows).

Although they stayed in exactly the same areas, their land was gradually reduced by treaties in 1851, 1868, 1882, 1891 and 1904 so that the present Crow Reservation is in the Crow heartland but is very much smaller than their original hunting grounds.

The site of the battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 is within the Crow Reservation area.
