I worked as a construction boilermaker for 10 years. Health risks associated with this job include loud noise, dust, chemical exposure (fuel mostly), burns and cuts are common, eye injures occur, and the fact that often men are living away from home or do not have a partner with them can increase stress which often leads to substance abuse, (alcohol and tobacco). In Australia, safety is regulated and is quite good which helps protect individuals. However some companies take shortcuts with health to get the job done quicker. Sites are dynamic places to work with lots of activities occurring so it is imperative to be spatially aware at all times, around you and from crane lifts and workers above.

What is health and safety training for?

Health and safety training is for the safety of yourself and others around you. Its purpose is to provide you with the knowledge to avoid hazards in the workplace or to be able to protect yourself from them. Definitely for the safety of your self and others around you. A lot of jobs (such as construction) can have a lot of hazards in the workplace and it could be bad for a worker's health and safety.
