If you are 'gnostic' it means that you are sure of your beliefs, whether that is in a deity, or in nothing (i.e. Atheism). If you are gnostic you can claim to 'know' that your beliefs are correct - you have faith in those beliefs. If you do not have any faith in anything, you are sceptical about all things and are Agnostic (although 'agnostic' can mean many things, and can refer specifically to the belief in a deity).

Gnosticism is all about truly knowing something. If you do not truly know something, then in that respect at least you are agnostic. It is uncertain exactly what is required for you to know something, but the Tripartite Theory of Knowledge states that to know something:

  • You must believe in the thing (the obvious bit)
  • You must know it to be true. If at a later date you discover that it is not true, you will admit that you are no longer gnostic in that respect
  • You must have a reason for believing it is true. Guessing is will not cause you to know something

More recently (this theory is thousands of years old), this theory was put into disrepute as experiments were carried out in the 60s which proved that it does not work, but it's still useful in terms of understanding knowledge.
