on top, on the middle link you might note a marking. i,e. DWM, Erfurt, 42, S/42
that would be the maker. the 1917 indicates when it was made. all other marks
are basically proof marks. The serial number is of no great importence unless it happens to be # 6, 12, or the like..........value depends on overall condition...
Also, some WW1 lugers were issued to police units. on the front grip of the frame is where you would find what police or military unit the pistol was assigned.
