If their was a hurricane or a volcanic eruption, it was because they thought the gods were mad at them. Having gods gave them a reason for things that at the time they couldn't explain.

i believe that "monsters" are important to greek mythology because the monsters represent what people fear the most. and the gods represent how to overcome those fears. it was to help the ancient Greeks explain things that, maybe, they didnt understand or didnt know how to cope with.
The ancient people that lived in Greece valued their religion (what we call mythology) very important in their everyday lives, and they used them to explain things they did not understand. However, I don't believe that the Greek/Roman myths are true, and the value I see in them is only for interesting stories, and also an insight to how the Ancient Greeks thought of the world.
