Her father put her in charge of the labyrinth where sacrifices were made as part of reparations (either to Poseidon or to Athena, depending on the version of the myth); however, she would later help the hero Theseus in overcoming the Minotaur and saving the would-be sacrificial victims. Theseus later promises to marry her but leaves her on the island of Naxos where she is then found crying by the god Dionysus. Dionysus falls in love with her and vice versa and they get married making her a semi-goddess. However, this is only one of the many myths surrounding Ariadne.
It depends upon the symbol, but usually they are references to a myth in which Hades plays a part.
A myth is a sacred story involving the activity of supernatural beings in the origins of the world or some part thereof. The story of Jacob fits this definition. Please note that the term myth as used by scholars does not imply truth or falsehood.

Hercules, after killing his wife, Megara, and their children under the influence of a madness sent by Hera, is so upset that he wants to kill himself. However, he is saved by Theseus who clasps his bloodstained hands. This shows that Theseus is willing to have a part in Hercules' guilt. Theseus then tells Hercules to return to Athens with him.
In the Shakespeare play, a Midsummer Night's Dream, when we first see Theseus the first words out of his mouth are "our nuptual hour draws on apace". Now when a man walks on stage and the first thing he says is, "Hippolyta, we're getting married soon." how can this possibly be a surprise? We don't know who this man is or anything about him beforehand, and it is not inherently surprising that someone should be getting married. If he said it in Act three, after we find out that he's already married, or he's a monk, or he's gay or something, then we might be surprised by this announcement. Likewise, if he said "Hippolyta, I have three legs", or, "Hippolyta, I was born on the moon" a little surprise might be expected. But this is not surprising. It's not even surprising if you know the Greek myth, since it is part of the mythology that Theseus does marry Hippolyta.

The word myth has several meanings.A traditional story of ostensibly historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or natural phenomenon;A person or thing having only an imaginary or unverifiable existence; orA metaphor for the spiritual potentiality in the human being.
An allegory is a story or narrative where characters and events symbolize deeper meanings or concepts, often used to convey moral or political messages. A myth, on the other hand, is a traditional story that explains the origins of the world, usually involving supernatural beings or events. Myths are often part of a culture's belief system, while allegories are literary devices used to convey specific meanings or themes.
