The real effects of British contact with Australia are most visible in the legal and Parliamentary systems. The separation of powers and the separation of church and state is somewhat blurred though.

The legal system is pretty much based on UK common law.

The parliamentary system mimics but does not mirror the UK system of an Upper and Lower houses of Parliament. In the UK the House of Lords is made up of Spiritual membership from the Church of England. The remainder of the House of Lords are appointments made by the Queen on advice from her Prime Minister. The predominant colour in the House of Lords is red.

In Australia, the Upper House is called the Senate. Senators are elected with a proportionate representation in from each state. When watching television, even with the sound down it's easy to identify which 'house' is being televised because of the colour of the seats. In the Senate the seating is red (like the House of Lords) and represents the predominant colour of the Australian landscape.

Meanwhile, the lower house (Britain's House of Commons) is pretty much the same in Australia but it is named the House of Representatives. The green coloured seating represents the colour of (the underside) of various Eucalypt leaves.

Other cultural effects could be in beer and cricket, Rugby union and league, and soccer. The traditional 'meat and three veges' meal has pretty much disappeared since the 70s when Australia began to embrace multi-culturalism.

What was the main way American popular culture reached Australia in the 1960s?

Television. The advent of television in Australia enabled direct contact between the rest of the world and Australia which, up until then, had essentially been isolated from such influences. Many TV programmes came straight from America, and Australia was exposed to its mix of family life, comedy and news, thus providing a strong cultural influence on Australia's receptive society.
