Perhaps the easiest way is to search for your location in Google maps. When you find your village, town or city, there will be a pointer on the map. You can now zoom the map out until you can see where the pointer is in relation to the equator.
If you don't know your present location then this becomes much more difficult! One method would be to use celestial navigation techniques to find your approximate latitude (for example the angle of the pole star above the horizon in degrees is equal to your latitude north of the equator).
Also the stars appear to move at night due to the rotation of the earth. If the stars rise in the east and travel straight up, you are on the equator, if they appear to drift to the south, then you are north of the equator and vice versa.

Lines of latitude. Longitude is from Pole to Pole.
Except for a very few specific ones, the lines don't have names. The lines that mark latitudes north of the equator are "parallels of north latitude".
Lat rhymes with fat. Lines of latitude go around the world like belts, and locate positions to the north and south.Longitude lines are long. Unlike latitude lines longitude lines are all the same length as they run from pole to pole. The locate positions to the east and west.
The lines used to measure distances north and south of the equator are latitude lines. They include the equator (0 degrees latitude) and equidistant circles between the equator and the poles. Latitude lines represent the surface points having the same angle from the equator, and planes perpendicular to the Earth's north-south axis.
Lines of latitude are imaginary lines used to measure distances north and south of the Equator or 0 degrees.
Lines of latitude are called parallels. The lines start at the equator and are located north and south of the equator.
