you have to use the hoe to dig the dirt on the floor. stairs will appear. the stairs can be anywhere except on the perimeter of the room (the squares next to the wall). you cant actually dig down to other floors, to unlock the first mine you have to visit carter in the dig site aither early in the morning or late at night after flora has left the site and he will ask you if you have a hammer, then he will get you to knock down a wall to the first mine. (note that in the mines there will be holes that you randomly find that you fall down to go down many floors, also there are stairs that let you go down one floor at a time).
