Sometimes when I'm asked to describe the Buddhist teachings, I say this:
(1) Everything is connected;
(2) Nothing lasts;
(3) You are not alone.
These first three are really just a restatement of the traditional Three
Marks of Existence: non-self, impermanence, and suffering. The fact
that we all suffer means we are all in the same boat, and that's what
allows us to feel compassion.
(4) Life is full of suffering
(5) Suffering exists because of our desires and aversions.
(6) There is a state of mind in which suffering ends (enlightenment).
(7) There is a path to attain this state; That path is called the Eight Fold Path.
Items 4 - 7 are the Four Noble Truths.
(8) Bodichitta (Loving- Kindness / Compassion) is the first step to
enlightenment (and to solving the world's problems)
(9) The 5 Precepts concisely describe a moral life
The 5 precepts are: (1) not to take the life of anything living, (2) not
to take anything not freely given, (3) to abstain from sexual
misconduct and sensual overindulgence, to (4) refrain from untrue
speech, and (5) to avoid intoxication, that is, losing mindfulness.
(10) Mindfulness of thoughts and actions are the key to wisdom and therefore
to the path of enlightenment.
it is the religion of a cycle. For example when you die you live again

Buddhism is a religion based upon the principal that each person is responsible for their own liberation from the illusions of the world, and our minds, and to gain enlightenment; where enlightenment is a state of being free from preconceptions, judgments, delusions and illusions. The Buddha's findings was that our happiness and suffering all starts and ends with our own minds and that training our minds to see the world and ourselves clearly was the way to attain peace and happiness. As for training our minds the Buddha indicated that our ego-centric lives, full of desires and aversions, is the main cause of all suffering and that overcoming these desires and aversions (which are all transitory and illusionary) is necessary step in our progress towards enlightenment. The Buddha also taught that we need to lead a moral, kind, compassionate, peaceful and generous life.
It is a religion and a way of life devoid of authority, ritual, speculation, tradition, and the supernatural. There is no dogma that a person needs to believe in to be a Buddhist. The Buddha also asked each of his followers to challenge his findings and put it to the test to see if he was correct. 2500 years later we can find no fault with his logic and reason. It is also scientific; many of the Buddha's findings and practices have been scientifically proven correct even today.
The main aspects of Buddhism include the fact that they believe that Buddha was enlightened under the Bodha tree and is their only master. They believe that the world was not created by a God. They believe that the purpose of life is to gain compassion and wisdom.
Buddhism is best thought of as a set of practices designed to reduce suffering (dissatisfaction, troubles) rather than as a religion. There is no creed in Buddhism that practitioners have to accept. Furthermore, since there is no God or God-concept in Buddhism, there's nothing necessarily supernatural about it either.
The concept of Buddhism is only about 2 or 3 centuries old; it was due to western explorers and missionaries. People who simply thought of themselves as following the Way were all categorized as being of the same kind, which has resulted in many misunderstandings.
Buddhists are practitioners--not believers. The practices that the Buddha recommended that his followers test for themselves were designed to replace the prevalent common poisons of greed, hostility, and delusion that cause suffering with extraordinary practices (such as meditation) promoting clarity, insight, and present-moment awareness that cause abiding peace and ease.
