There are many ways to "enlighten" yourself depending on which subject you want to "enlighten" yourself in.

If you want to generally enlighten yourself, one of the first steps is to find out who you are and how you want to be. This includes noticing and understanding:

1. Your ideals

2. Your behavior towards others

3. How generally you perceive the world around you

The next step is to understand if these are health for you and the others around you.

Is any of this limiting me and my dreams?

Is any of this hurting or not empowering others around me?

Am I at peace with myself?

The next step is to find out if any of the answers to these questions are not what you want. If the answers aren't what you want them to be, then having the motivation and courage to find what makes you happiest is the main thing you should contemplate on at that point in time.

Finally when to feel comfortable changing what you want to change, changing things slowly is most helpful so that you can fully understand that the change is what you ultimately want. You can always stop what you're doing and re-asses by redoing the above steps.

Sorry if this didn't answer the question you were trying to ask. For those who are wondering, I have come up with this through my own experiences; I did not get this from a book.

Life is Suffering. Not getting what you want is suffering; Getting what you do not want is suffering; Not associating with those you wish to associate is suffering; Associating with those you wish not to associate is suffering. Old age, Disease, Death and the Changes in life are the other 4 types of suffering. Therefore the central idea to attain enlightenment is to get out of Samsara, the everlasting realm of suffering.
