The special Islamic celebrations are:

* Al Hijra (Islamic new year)

* Muharram (the loss of the prophet Muhammad's grandson for a good reason)

* Milad ul-Nabi (Prophet Muhammad's birthday)

* Lailut al isra WA al-Miraj (The Prophet Muhammad travelled on a buraq, or flying horse, to Masjid al Aqsa, Jerusalem, and to Allah)

* Ramadan (fasting from dawn till sunset)

* Eid ul-Fitr (The celebration of ending Ramadan)

* Eid ul-Adha (The time to sacrifice an animal like the prophet Ibrahim)

These celebrations are the major ones.

There are two annual festivals (or Eids).

  1. Eid-ul-Fitr: on the first day after end of Ramadan. This eid celebrates the end of Ramadan and the the Muslims conclusion of Ramadan fasting and hoping being rewarded by God mercy.
  2. Eid-ul-Adha:celebrates the days of Hajj or pilgrimage.

In addition to these two annual festivals, there is the weekly Friday festival in which Muslims gather in mosques for listening to sermons and praying.

It is worthy to mention also that some Muslims celebrate the good occasions of Eid-Milad-un-Nabi (The holy prophet Mohammad PBUH's birthday) and other good occasions although these occasions were not celebrated in time of the prophet or the first four Caliphs.

They are mainly two annual festivals and one weekly holiday.

The two festivals are:

  1. Eid al-Fitr, which is the first day of Shawwal month (the 10th month in the Islamic lunar calendar) the month which follows the month of fasting, Ramadan.
  2. Eid al-Adha which falls from the 9th to the 13th of Zul Hijjeh (12th month of the Islamic lunar calendar). The 9th day corresponds to the day when the Hajj pilgrims stand on the plain of Arafat in Saudi Arabia. The tenth day commemorates the Prophet Abraham offering to sacrifice his son Ismael .

The weekly holiday is Friday where Muslims pray the Gomaa prayer in mosque (at the midday time) and listen to a religious sermon.

There are two annual feasts and one weekly feast.

The two important annual Islamic feasts are; namely:

  • Eid Al-Fitr, on the first day of Shawal (the tenth month of the Islamic lunar year): This feast comes on the first day after end of the Ramadan month to celebrate the concluding of Ramadan fasting (the fourth pillar of the 5 Islam pillars).
  • Eid El-Adha: This feast comes on the 9th through 13th of the month Zu Al-hijja (12th month in the Hijra Islamic lunar calendar) which corresponds to the Hajj ritual worship days. This celebrates when Prophet Ibrahim (or Abrahan) almost sacrificed his son Ismail in obedience for Allah (or God in English and same God worshiped in Judaism and Christianity) but Allah saved Prophet Ismail (peace be upon him and his father Ibrahim) in the end and we celebrate the fact that he would have sacrificed his son for Allah.

The weekly feast is Friday gathering for praying in mosques and listening to the religious sermon.
