Windows Vista requires 512 MB of RAM and 15 GB of free hard drive space (can be crammed into 9 after installation).
Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) requires 512 MB of RAM and 9 GB of free hard drive space.
Ubuntu Linux 8.04 requires 512 MB of RAM to boot from a LiveCD, but will install on as little as 64 MB. 384 MB is the recommended minimum. 8 GB of free hard drive space is recommended, but as little as 4 GB is usable.
Linux can encompass a wide variety of platforms and system requirements. For a reasonable comparison between a Windows server, and a Linux server, let's use a common Linux server product, Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux:

Memory requirements for Windows Server SBS 2003 are dictated by Microsoft. Per MS systems requirements, 512MB of RAM is minimum, 1GB is recommended, and 4GB is maximum. You may want to consider running it with 4GB of RAM if you plan on using ISA, Exchange, and SQL components of SBS.
