The cortex
The brain is covered in ridges (gyri) ans grooves (sulci).
While there are several techniques used by gun makers, the original method was to start with a smooth bore barrel. A long screw with a single cutting tooth was inserted in the barrel, and pushed down, turning as it went. This would scratch a spiral line on the inside of the barrel. Raise the cutter a notch, repeat. Eventually, the scratch becomes a groove cut into the metal. Rotate the screw, repeat for the next groove. Some barrels had 2 grooves, some 4,5,6, etc.

Corrugated iron.
A rifle was one of the earliest guns. It was first made with ridges on the inside of the barrel that cause the bullets to spin.
The Threads on a Bolt are the ridges or grooves that screws into a Nut or into a metal frame or such.
The barrel of the gun has lands and grooves (grooves and ridges) cut in a spiral. The bullet molds to these and starts to spin as it moves down the barrel. The bullet just continues to spin after it leaves the barrel.Correct. The ridges are known as 'lands'. It is possible to calculate how fast a bullet will spin if you know the twist rate of the barrel and the velocity of the bullet. My AR15 has a twist rate of 1-in-8 ie for every eight inches the bullet travels down the barrel, the bullet is rotated once. It fires a .223 round at approx 2,800 feet per second so... The formula is (bullet velocity x 720)/twist rate so... (2,800x720)/8 is an incredible 252,000RPM!
There are 119 ridges on the United States quarter dollar. The ridges are there mostly for making sure the coins are properly used in coin operated machines.
