It is said that to many Christians theology is something alien, overly intellectual and wholly unappealing, a view that many theologians wouled regard as a misconception itself. However, this question asks about the misconceptions involved in the study of theology. The risk here is in interpreting the question too broadly, as the study of theology inherently involves a set of beliefs that others, even within a different school of the same faith, would strongly dispute. The study of Christian theology generally goes beyond the study of faith, and looks into the background and meaning of The Bible, development of Christianity and its impact on society. Michaela Davey (Mastering Theology) discusses what she believes are misconceptions regarding the dates of authorship of some books in the Old Testament - or are her own views misconceptions? Burton L. Mack, who is a professor of Early Christianity at the School of Theology in Claremont discusses (Who Wrote the New Testament) Christianity as being wholly mythical - so is Christian belief a misconception, or is he putting up a misconception to be shot down? In summary, it is probably not possible to give a single set of misconceptions that every theology student would agree with. Each student will define as misconceptions that which conflicts with his or her own understanding of theology.
